These works are shapes of beads made from beads. The shape of the whole work, viewed from a distance, is a magnified version of its component. By repeating the same method, the beads made from beads can compose larger beads.
All artworks are made from different shapes at various levels. In painting, at one level, a shape is formed by paint applied by the brush. At another level, painted parts form shapes of trees, which becomes a scene with forest and mountains. At the highest level, shape is that of a rectangular canvas. Although, each of the components are made of different shapes, they come together to compose a painting. The same logic can be applied to sculptures. Each of the components are essential to the work; without them the work would not exist. But limiting the view to one component blinds the viewers from the others.
These works of Yamauchi are also composed of shapes at two levels. That is, the shape of the circular cylinder shape which can be seen as a whole, and then the circular cylinder shape of the small beads. We can view the work only at one level. When we look at the shape of the small beads, we cannot see the shape of the whole. On the other hand, when we look at the shape of the whole, the small beads are only dots. We gradually notice that the two shapes are identical. The circular cylinder shape of the whole uses its component beads as its model. We are looking at two shapes at the same time by focusing on either one of them. The beads are shapes that exist on its own, and independent from any other shapes, such as canvas and pedestals.
